Whether a sound event is too loud can only be determined if it is related to a specific location.

This is exactly what the dBEL.TooLoud? application makes possible: a sound source - whether concert stage, radio or lawn mower - is acoustically measured, the sound power is automatically calculated and a propagation calculation to a specific location is calculated.

The results are assessed and in this way the user learns whether the sound event is perceptible or even to be classified as problematic with regard to noise protection.

• dBEL.TooLoud? is a free app that allows you to measure a sound source and calculate a noise prediction based on it at a freely defined location on an online map.
• The prediction calculation is frequency-dependent and based on the ISO 9613-2 standard using the simplified formula for ground attenuation.
• In the propagation calculation, no shielding by terrain and buildings is taken into account, which can lead to higher calculated sound levels in specific situations.
• The app uses GPS to locate the user on an online map.
• Once the position and dimensions of the sound source (e.g. stage with loudspeakers) have been positioned and the point of interest has been placed on the map, the app navigates you to a valid measurement area.
• If the GPS signal strength is poor, the measurement position can be set manually.
• Now you can take the measurement yourself. A representative measurement period should be recorded.
• After the measurement has been stopped, the user receives a direct classification of the predicted levels with reference to limit values and audibility according to DIN EN ISO 389‐7, 2006. The user must note here that in the interpretation with reference to guide values, it is assumed that it is a permanent sound event.
